How to write a robotics job description engineers will finish

Write robotics JDs that name the robot, stack, and site. Practical advice for AMR, humanoid, drone, and field hiring managers.

Robotics engineers ignore most job descriptions. They open the posting, search for the robot, the stack, and whether the work is on site, then bounce. If you are hiring AMR, humanoid, drone, or field talent, the JD is not a branding exercise. It is a filter that either saves you time or floods you with web developers who once imported OpenCV.

What a robotics job description must say

"Robotics software engineer" is not a job. "C++ engineer on a pallet AMR using ROS 2 Humble in a 3PL site" is a job. Name:

  • The environment: warehouse aisle, factory cell, outdoor inspection, OR.
  • The layer: perception, controls, planning, firmware, fleet, deployment.

Publish the stack without a wishlist

A useful stack section is short.

Must have: C++17, Linux, one shipped system that talks to hardware or a high-fidelity sim.

Never put ten years of ROS, PyTorch, and FPGA in the same bullet unless you are hiring a principal who will actually own all three. That pattern is how you get zero senior applicants and a pile of keyword-stuffed CVs.

If the work is PLC and cell integration, say so. Industrial people do not search for "full stack." They search for PLC robotics jobs and industrial jobs.

On site versus remote is a product decision

Compensation and leveling

Robotics pay bands are wide. A junior AMR deployment engineer and a senior humanoid controls engineer are not in the same market. If you cannot publish a number, publish a band and the level. "Senior means you have shipped a controller that ran unsupervised on a customer floor" is more useful than "5+ years."

A structure that works

  1. Opening paragraph: robot, site, and the problem this person owns in 90 days.
  2. Work you will do: six bullets max, verbs first.
  3. Stack: must versus nice.
  4. How we run hardware: lab, customer site, sim.
  5. Interview: what the loop looks like. A take-home on a bag of data beats a trivia panel.

Link internally to the team blog or a robot video. Do not link to a 40-page culture deck.

AMR: "You will own navigation recoveries for a pallet AMR fleet in two 3PL sites. First 90 days: ship a change that cuts manual assists during shift change. C++ and ROS 2 Humble. Three days a week on site in [city]."

Humanoid: "You will own whole-body balance tests on our lab robot. First 90 days: a repeatable fall-recovery eval in sim and on hardware. C++, Linux, on site in [city]. CUDA is nice. This is not a remote job."

Intern: "Summer intern on our AMR test bench. You will write Python fixtures, run overnight soaks, and file bugs with logs. You will not train a foundation model. Link a repo that moved a robot, even in Gazebo."

  • Listing every tool the company has ever touched.

  • Requiring a clearance when the work is unclassified sim.

Write the posting the way you would brief a new teammate on Monday morning. Then publish it. Engineers will finish it, and the rest will leave, which is the point.
